Common Lens Questions
NYDEF® utilizes a premium Polyamide (Nylon) from Carl Zeiss Vision. While standard polycarbonate has an Abbe value of 30, NYDEF® reaches 52, which provides significantly less distortion and better color definition.
Ri-Pel® is a ZEISS-patented coating that makes the lens surface "slippery" to molecules. Water beads off, and oils like sunscreen or salt spray cannot bond, making them significantly easier to clean.
Yes, but the Ri-Pel® coating makes it rarely necessary. A simple wipe with the provided microfiber cloth typically removes all debris.
Yes. NYDEF® lenses feature a premium hard coating that ranks significantly higher in scratch resistance than standard thermoplastic lenses.
Optical Performance & Clarity
Abbe Value measures light dispersion as it passes through a material. Standard polycarbonate has a low value of 30, which causes "chromatic aberration" or rainbow-like blurring. NYDEF®'s value of 52 is nearly identical to the human eye, ensuring crisp focus.
Traditional curved lenses create distortion because the optical axis is tilted. NYDEF® 8-base lenses utilize Prismatic Compensation Technology to precision-taper the lens from center to edge, correcting the light path for a 20% wider usable field of vision.
While NYDEF® refers to our proprietary polyamide material, many styles are available with high-efficiency ZEISS polarization that filters 99.9% of reflected glare.
Durability & Real-World Use
Standard nylon is soft, but NYDEF® Polyamide is a high-grade polymer treated with a vacuum-bonded ZEISS Premium Hard Coating. This boosts scratch resistance to rival traditional polycarbonate while maintaining superior flexibility.
Ri-Pel® is oleophobic, meaning salt crystals and sunscreens cannot bond to the surface. Instead of smearing, contaminants bead up and slide off. NYDEF® is also tested for 100+ hours in salt-fog chambers with zero degradation.
Comfort & Health
It is a result of Density. NYDEF® has a density of only 1.01 g/cm³, the lightest performance optical material available. For comparison, mineral glass is 150% heavier (2.50 g/cm³) and polycarbonate is roughly 20% heavier (1.20 g/cm³).
Yes. The ZEISS tinting process provides a natural filter for High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light in the 400nm-450nm range. This reduces atmospheric haze and macular strain during long hours in bright sun.
Due to the precision engineering of the sliding rails, the lenses are integrated into the frame architecture. Current designs do not support varying prescription thicknesses, though this remains a future goal.
Care & Maintenance
Never use household glass cleaners like Windex, as ammonia can eat through premium coatings over time. For extreme dirt, use a drop of mild, lotion-free dish soap and lukewarm water.
High heat is the enemy. Do not leave Popticals on a dashboard in 100°F weather. Expansion can cause coating layers to crack, a process called "crazing". Lenses should be kept in their case when not in use.
Competitive Comparison
Cost and manufacturing complexity. Polycarbonate is a "commodity" material. NYDEF® is a premium Polyamide requiring precision injection molding and vacuum-bonded coatings that many brands skip to save cost.
NYDEF® offers nearly double the clarity (Abbe 52 vs. 30) of polycarbonate-based lenses used by major sports brands. You get glass-level reso
Core Innovation & Green Reading
Standard sunglasses often "flatten" the green, making it hard to see subtle breaks. NYDEF® Golf lenses, engineered in partnership with Carl Zeiss Vision, use specific purple and violet tints to reduce the saturation of green light. This unmasks the terrain, allowing you to clearly see grain direction, slopes, and contours that are invisible to the naked eye.
Absolutely not. Taking your glasses off shocks your pupils with bright light, causing you to squint and lose focus immediately. NYDEF® lenses actually enhance the contrast of the grass, making the dark (uphill) and light (downhill) patches much easier to see than with your naked eye.
By suppressing the green and blue background light, the NYDEF® tint creates a massive contrast against the white of the golf ball. This makes the ball "pop" brilliantly, making it significantly easier to track in flight and locate in the rough.
Instead of reading a putt solely from behind the ball, walk halfway to the hole and view the line from a side angle. Look closely through your NYDEF® lenses: darker grass indicates the grain is growing toward you (an uphill or slower putt) , while lighter or shiny grass indicates the grain is growing away (a downhill or faster putt).
The Polarization Myth
Polarized lenses are incredible for fishing or driving because they block horizontal glare. However, on a golf course, glare is critical data; the light reflecting off the grass tells you the direction of the grain and how a putt will break. Polarized lenses block this reflected light, flattening the green and destroying your 3D depth perception.
NYDEF® Golf lenses are intentionally non-polarized to preserve 100% of your 3D depth perception. Because your depth of field is fully intact, the visual flattening effect common with other sport sunglasses is gone, allowing you to accurately judge the distance to the pin.
Tints & Optical Clarity
Purple filters out more light, making it ideal for bright, sunny days and younger players whose eyes efficiently capture light. Violet allows slightly more light transmission, making it perfect for overcast or cloudy days, or for older players who naturally require a bit more light to maintain sharp vision.
Only for the first 10 to 15 minutes. Your brain and eyes quickly undergo "color adaptation," and the purple hue fades from your perception. What remains is a highly contrasted, high-definition view where the overwhelming green background is muted.
The Abbe value measures the optical clarity of a lens material. Standard polycarbonate sport sunglasses have a low Abbe value of around 30, which causes a microscopic "rainbow blur" at the edges of objects. NYDEF® Nylon lenses boast an Abbe value of 52, resulting in zero edge-distortion and zero eye strain.
Visual Endurance & Physiology
Squinting against the sun reduces your blink rate, dries out your eyes, and severely fatigues your facial muscles. This visual strain drains your physical energy, leading to the dreaded "back-nine crash". NYDEF® Golf lenses keep your eyes and facial muscles totally relaxed, ensuring you have the same energy on the 18th tee as you did on the 1st.
Dr. Craig Farnsworth, known as "The Putt Doctor," is a sports optometrist and putting coach to over 150 touring professionals. He medically and practically validates NYDEF® Golf lenses, recommending them to his players to help them read the grain and stop them from 'gassing out' on the back nine due to eye fatigue.
The Frame, FL2 System & Storage
No. Popticals frames are made from Swiss Grilamid TR90. Because they are incredibly light (density of 1.01 g/cm³) and utilize an 8-base wraparound design, they grip the head securely without relying on tight pressure points.
The FL2 Micro-Rail System® uses an "open-track" architecture made of aerospace-grade stainless steel. There are no enclosed gears to get jammed. If you get sand or dirt in the mechanism, simply run it under fresh tap water and slide it open and closed a few times.
Never. The rails are meticulously calibrated using parallel-plane architecture. The lenses slide behind one another with a precise safety gap, ensuring they never make surface-to-surface contact.
Because the frames collapse to a smartphone-sized footprint, we provide an air-sealed, High-Impact ABS Hard Shell case. It is crush-tested and built like a vault to protect from heavy clubs, yet small enough to fit in your front pocket or the smallest compartment of your golf bag.
Care & Off-Course Use
Your lenses feature a premium ZEISS Ri-Pel® coating that repels water, sweat, and oils. Simply wipe them with the provided Popticals microfiber cloth. Never use a golf towel, as they hold microscopic dirt and sand that will permanently scratch your premium optics.
Yes! The high-definition Abbe 52 clarity and high-contrast tint make them phenomenal for driving, tennis, baseball, or mountain biking. However, because they are intentionally non-polarized, they are not optimal for deep-water fishing where you need to cut through horizontal water glare.

Certifications & MIL-SPEC Armor
Yes. Every pair in the POPZULU™ collection is engineered to meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1+ high-mass and high-velocity impact safety standards, as well as MIL-PRF-32432 military ballistic fragmentation standards. They are certified armor mathematically proven to stop high-velocity threats.
Absolutely. The "Z87.1+" marking confirms they are fully OSHA-compliant for occupational eye protection. They provide the wrap-around coverage and durability mandated for construction, manufacturing, and heavy industrial job sites.
No. This is a dangerous myth. Standard sport sunglasses are not built for high-velocity impacts. If hit by spall, ejected brass, or a ricochet, standard lenses can shatter into dangerous secondary shrapnel directly into the eye.
ZEISS IMPACTO™ Optics
Basic injection-molded polycarbonate is the industry standard, but it is prone to peripheral distortion and scratching. ZEISS IMPACTO™ is a specialized, optical-grade reinforced polycarbonate up to 5x tougher than standard safety lenses, engineered for maximum kinetic absorption.
No. Cheap safety plastics create optical distortion that smears red dot sights and causes "star-bursting." Because POPZULU™ utilizes high-fidelity ZEISS optics, you get zero-distortion clarity for crisp, rapid target acquisition without edge-blur.
Yes. The lenses act as a complete environmental shield, filtering out 100% of harmful UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation to prevent ocular fatigue and sun damage during prolonged outdoor operations.
Ear-Pro Integration & Comfort
Standard safety glasses have thick, rigid plastic temples that break the acoustic seal of ear muffs and cause massive pressure-point migraines. POPZULU™ temples are constructed from an ultra-thin TR90 memory polymer that flexes perfectly under comms headsets, maintaining your noise-canceling seal with zero pressure points.
Yes. Every frame is equipped with a fully adjustable nose piece for a custom fit. Additionally, the TR90 temples feature integrated ports designed for the included quick-connect retention strap, ensuring a zero-slip, high-friction hold during dynamic movement or heavy recoil.
The Grilamid® TR90 memory polymer is specifically designed to bend and absorb kinetic energy rather than snapping or shattering. It is an extremely durable, shape-retaining chassis built for austere environments.
Deployable Logistics & Storage
Yes. The patented FL2 Micro-Rail System™ utilizes high-tensile stainless steel tracks that absorb energy. The true fail-safe is the flush-mount safety latch on the interior bridge; once deployed and locked, the frame becomes a completely rigid chassis that cannot mechanically collapse while worn.
POPZULU™ shrinks to the footprint of a smartphone, allowing them to stow securely inside the included crush-proof ABS Hard Shell vault. Because standard "coffin" cases are too bulky for plate carriers, our vault features an integrated carabiner and reinforced loop to mount directly to MOLLE webbing or a duty belt.
The open-track stainless steel rails are highly corrosion-resistant and do not feature enclosed gears that trap debris. If exposed to heavy grit or mud, simply rinse the frames with fresh water and slide them open and closed to clear the tracks instantly.
Care & Warranty Protection
The ZEISS IMPACTO™ lenses are treated with premium hard-coatings that provide heavy-duty scratch resistance. They are naturally engineered to repel common job-site solvents and gun-cleaning oils without degrading the optic.
Yes, we back our tactical eyewear with a 2-year Manufacturer's Warranty covering any defects in materials or workmanship.
We know tactical environments are brutal on gear. Through the Popticals Replacement Program, if you damage your POPZULU™ frames or scratch the lenses within 2 years of purchase, you can return them, pay a flat fee of $75, and we will send you a brand-new pair, no questions asked.
Yes. We offer free standard shipping to the continental US on all orders over $99. We also process and ship directly to APO/FPO addresses to support our deployed military personnel.
Core Mechanics & Deployment
To use, simply slide the frames together and let the Neodymium magnets guide the center bridge into a locked position. To store, pull lightly at the center point of connection to separate the halves and slide them inward along the rails.
Yes. The combination of the micro-rail track and the high-flux Neodymium magnetic lock ensures the frames "find" their connection point automatically. This creates a secure, solid-frame feel that stays rigid on the face during high-impact activities.
Traditional folding glasses rely on weak center hinges and are restricted to flat fashion frames. The FL2 Micro-Rail System™ uses Linear Displacement Technology—sliding the lenses on stainless steel tracks. This is the only technology that allows an 8-base performance wrap to collapse into a pocket-sized footprint.
Durability & Materials
Actually, most sunglasses break precisely because they are rigid. The FL2 Micro-Rail System™ is machined from aerospace-grade stainless steel, making the rails the strongest structural point of the glasses. They are engineered to endure years of continuous deployment with zero loss in structural integrity.
Yes. The entire system—from the internal linkages to the magnetic housing—is built with 100% corrosion-resistant stainless steel and Swiss Grilamid® TR90. It is specifically designed to withstand saltwater, sweat, and extreme outdoor elements without rusting or seizing.
No. Unlike standard screw-hinges that back out over time, the FL2 Micro-Rail System™ uses a Constant-Tension Friction Fit. The interaction between the TR90 polymer and stainless steel pins is engineered to maintain a smooth but firm resistance over thousands of cycles.
Lens Protection & Safety
Never. The FL2 Micro-Rail System™ uses Parallel-Path Architecture. The rails are meticulously calibrated so the lenses slide behind one another with a precise 2mm safety gap. They never make surface-to-surface contact, keeping your optics pristine.
The chassis is constructed from Grilamid® TR90, a Swiss-engineered "memory polymer". It is designed to absorb kinetic energy and flex under pressure, aggressively resisting the brittle stress cracks common in standard polycarbonate frames.
While the Neodymium magnets are powerful, their magnetic field is highly localized to the bridge area. They will not interfere with modern smartphones, GPS units, or wearable tech. However, we recommend keeping them away from magnetic-stripe hotel keys for extended periods.
Storage & The Hard Shell Case
The system achieves a roughly 50% reduction in storage volume compared to standard sports sunglasses. By sliding the 8-base curved lenses inward, the frames collapse down to a 2.5-inch footprint that is smaller than a standard smartphone.
Because the frames collapse into a dense package, we provide a custom, high-impact Hard Shell case. This eliminates the need to carry oversized "coffin" cases and ensures the glasses are protected from crushing when stowed in small pockets or gear bags.
Maintenance & Cleaning
Because the system is rust-proof, "grittiness" is almost always caused by external debris like fine sand or dried salt. Simply submerge the frames in a bowl of fresh water and slide them back and forth a few times to flush the tracks instantly.
No. Do not apply oils or lubricants to the mechanism. Lubricants can actually attract and hold more dust and dirt. The stainless steel pins and open-track design are engineered to function smoothly with just a periodic fresh water rinse.
Competitive Comparison
Historically, wrap-around sunglasses were considered "un-foldable" because their curvature prevented standard hinges from closing flat. Popticals owns 6 U.S. Utility Patents on the Linear Displacement sliding architecture, making it the only technology of its kind.
Traditional fashion brands use standard center hinges that create weak points and rely on tiny, fragile screws that can rust. The FL2 Micro-Rail System™ replaces those weak points with aerospace-grade stainless steel rails and magnets, offering tactical-grade durability in a high-wrap performance fit.
The FL2 rails require perfect tolerances for a smooth slide. While standard plastics are mass-produced, Italian artisans hand-check every rail path to ensure the slide is perfect. This craftsmanship ensures the mechanism feels like it's moving on silk.
The Portability Paradox
Traditional cases suffer from the "Coffin Syndrome"—they are bulky and oversized to accommodate fixed frames. Because Popticals utilize the FL2 system to collapse, we engineered a case with a smartphone-sized footprint, achieving a 65% reduction in bulk compared to standard sport cases.
No. Generic cases are made large to fit a variety of styles, causing "rattle" that leads to mystery scratches. Every Popticals case is style-specific. The interior is custom-molded to the collapsed footprint, securing the frame so the NYDEF® lenses are held in a parallel path with a 2mm safety gap from all surfaces.
ABS Hard Shell Armor
Extremely strong. It is built from an automotive-grade, high-impact thermoplastic. We have tested it under extreme static loads, including parking a vehicle tire on it (withstanding 1,500+ lbs of pressure), ensuring it won't crush at the bottom of a heavy gear bag or toolbox.
Zippers are the #1 failure point in outdoor gear; they snag, break, and rust in marine environments. We eliminated zippers entirely in favor of a Mechanical Quick-Latch made of high-impact ABS. It allows for one-handed "quick-draw" access and will never rust or seize.
Yes. Every Hard Shell case features a reinforced loop-point integrated directly into the ABS mold, preventing "tear-away" during intense activity. It comes with a heavy-duty carabiner for instant attachment to MOLLE webbing, tool belts, or backpacks.
Marine Safety & Buoyancy
Yes. When stowed inside the ABS Hard Shell case, you have a built-in fail-safe. The case utilizes an air-sealed architecture and gasket, making the entire vault buoyant. If dropped overboard, the case floats on the surface, allowing for easy retrieval.
The Hard Shell case is highly water-resistant and buoyant, designed to protect against splashes, rain, and short-term submersion. However, it is not a "dry bag" designed for deep-sea diving.
No. All hardware across the Popticals case lines is 100% rust-proof and corrosion-resistant. If exposed to heavy salt spray or sand, simply rinse the case with fresh water to maintain peak functionality.
Leather & Soft-Shell Cases
Yes. Unlike a standard designer pouch, our Full-Grain Italian Leather and Neoprene cases feature sewn-in rigid structural sub-frames. This internal skeleton prevents the case from being "squashed" in a pocket or packed bag, maintaining a protective vault around the glasses.
Yes. Both the Italian Leather and Neoprene series feature a 1.5" reinforced leather belt-loop integrated into the rear panel, keeping your eyewear secure and accessible at your hip.
Because we use premium Italian Leather, treat it like high-quality footwear. If it gets wet, wipe off excess moisture and let it air-dry at room temperature. Never place it on a heater or in direct sunlight, as extreme heat can cause the leather to crack.
Maintenance & Care
Our cases are lined with a non-abrasive micro-felt to prevent lens friction. If the interior gets dusty or sandy, use a can of compressed air or a lightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe it out. Ensuring a clean interior prevents "rattle-scratches" over time.
Yes. The ABS Hard Shell and Leather components are UV-stabilized to prevent brittleness or fading, even after prolonged exposure to direct desert or marine sun.
Swiss Material Science
Popticals frames utilize Swiss Grilamid TR90, a semi-crystalline polyamide "supermaterial". Unlike traditional rigid plastics that snap under pressure, TR90 maintains extreme flexibility, allowing it to bend and absorb impact energy without sacrificing tensile strength.
Grilamid TR90 has an ultra-low density of 1.01 g/cm³, making it the lightest engineering plastic in existence. It is approximately 16% lighter than standard polycarbonate frames , creating a "weightless" feel that eliminates nose-bridge pressure and ear fatigue during long wear.
No. Grilamid TR90 is a "memory plastic" with a high dynamic loading capacity. No matter how much you flex it to put it on or if it takes a hit on the trail, the material is engineered to return to its original, calibrated shape every single time.
Italian Craftsmanship & Finish
While the material is Swiss, the craftsmanship is Italian. Mass-market frames are injection-molded and often leave behind sharp "flash lines" or rough edges. Popticals frames are hand-assembled and hand-finished by artisans to ensure the internal tracks are perfectly smooth, allowing for the "buttery" slide of the FL2 Micro-Rail System.
Mass-produced frames typically have "molded-in" color that looks flat. Popticals frames are hand-painted in multiple stages by Italian artisans. This provides a depth of color and a premium luster that machine-sprayed frames cannot replicate.
Extreme Durability & Chemical Resistance
No. Grilamid TR90 is chemically inert and specifically engineered to resist the corrosive effects of skin oils, high-SPF sunscreens, and salt water. It will not bubble, peel, or degrade, staying factory-fresh through years of heavy outdoor exposure.
While you should always store them in their case, TR90 is highly heat-resistant and maintains high thermal stability. It maintains its structural integrity in extreme climatic conditions and will not become "floppy" or lose its tension like standard acetate or cheap plastics.
Yes. Grilamid TR90 is a biocompatible, hypoallergenic material. It is BPA-free and does not contain the plasticizers found in lower-grade plastics that can cause skin irritation during heavy sweat or long-term wear.
Sustainability & Eco-Manufacturing
It is the gold standard for Environmental Management Systems. Manufacturing in an ISO 14001:2015 certified facility in Italy means our production process is internationally audited to ensure we are minimizing our environmental footprint, reducing waste, and improving resource efficiency.
Yes. Because Grilamid TR90 is incredibly durable and resistant to weathering, it has a much longer product lifecycle than standard sunglasses. By building a frame that resists snapping, cracking, or peeling, we help reduce the "throw-away" cycle common in performance gear.
Competitive Comparison
It comes down to cost and production speed. Polycarbonate is a cheap commodity plastic that is fast to mold. Swiss Grilamid TR90 is an engineering super-polymer that costs more and requires a slower, more precise manufacturing process.
Standard wraparound frames often wrap the lens too aggressively, causing distortion. Our frame geometry is precision-molded to work specifically with ZEISS NYDEF® lenses, holding them in the exact "Prismatic Compensated" position to eliminate this effect.
General Fit & Wearability
Popticals are engineered with Grilamid® TR90, a highly flexible "memory polymer." Because the frames are designed to flex and contour to the wearer's head, most of our styles offer a highly adaptable, universal fit that securely accommodates a wide range of face shapes without pinching or sliding.
While the rigid rail tracks and TR90 memory plastic are designed to maintain their factory-calibrated shape for maximum durability, several of our performance and tactical models feature adjustable nose-pieces to ensure a custom, zero-slip fit on the bridge of the nose.

Cleaning NYDEF® Lenses
Thanks to the ZEISS Ri-Pel® coating, water and oils bead up and roll off easily. For daily cleaning, simply wipe them with the provided Popticals microfiber cloth. Never use a golf towel or t-shirt, as they hold microscopic dirt and sand that will permanently scratch your premium optics.
Never use household glass cleaners like Windex. The ammonia in these cleaners can eat through the premium lens coatings over time. For extreme dirt, use a drop of mild, lotion-free dish soap and lukewarm tap water, then dry with your microfiber cloth.
High heat is the primary enemy. Never leave your Popticals on the dashboard of a car in 100°F+ weather. Extreme heat causes the frame and lens materials to expand, which can cause the vacuum-bonded coating layers to develop tiny cracks known as "crazing". Always store them in their case.
FL2 System™ Rail Maintenance
Because the FL2 system is rust-proof, "grittiness" is almost always caused by external debris like fine sand or dried salt. Simply submerge the frames in a bowl of fresh water (or hold them under lukewarm running water) and slide them open and closed a few times. This will flush the open-track mechanism instantly.
No. Do not apply oils or aerosol lubricants to the mechanism. Lubricants actually attract and hold dust and dirt, turning it into a sludge. The stainless steel pins are engineered to function smoothly with just a periodic fresh water rinse.
Case Care & Longevity
Our cases are lined with a non-abrasive micro-felt. If the interior gets dusty or sandy, use a can of compressed air or a lightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe it out. Keeping the interior clean is the best way to prevent "rattle-scratches" on your frames over time.
Treat our premium Italian Leather like high-quality footwear. If it gets wet, wipe off the excess moisture and let it air-dry at room temperature. Never place it on a heater or in direct sunlight to speed up drying, as extreme heat can cause the leather to stiffen and crack.
